Modesty in the fashion world is evolving on a daily basis and is not only seen just on Muslim women but also female celebrities and women worldwide. Dressing modestly brings elegance, class, sophistication and beauty without having all of your skin showing or everything on display. As they say what’s the point of opening a present when the wrapping is already peeling away?
As Muslim women we are obligated to cover our body and wear hijab. The manner in which you choose to style yourself is totally up to you and today I’m here to help you ease into covering comfortably and fashionably with three simple tips.
First, always try new things. There are a wide range of hijab styles, so when choosing, it’s best to choose a style that best fits the shape of your own face. What works for you may not work for everyone else and vice versa. My personal favorite is the turban style; though months ago I thought it would never suit me, it’s honestly the best style I’ve worn to date! Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try new styles frequently, this will prevent you from getting bored. A good thing for new sisters and sisters on the go are the pre styled scarves that you just slip on, such as the jersey/lycra hijabs, bonnet caps and ninja inner neck scarves. For those who have a bit more time & want to create their own wrap then you can do so by using scarves such as pashmina, viscose, and cotton to name a few.
Second experiment with color. If you prefer to wear only dark colors then feel free to — everyone is entitled to their own preference. Muslim women throughout history have been known to stand out for their inner/outer beauty and dressing colorful, free, proud, sophisticated and modest. It’s important to always look presentable and neat in whatever we choose to wear, even if we prefer to just dress simply. Don’t be afraid to mix and match with your colors and outfits, as you don’t need to go out spending lots of money on a new wardrobe. Rather start off mixing and matching with the essentials. An example of an outfit could be a simple maxi dress teamed up with a long sleeve top underneath to cover the arms and chest area. You could wear it simply like this or to add some flare, dress it with a cardigan or blazer. Another example is a maxi skirt teamed up with a long sleeved top tucked in, you could add a vest to dress up the outfit a bit more.
Lastly, accessorise with prints and statement jewelry. I always find by adding print to any outfit, whether it’s a printed scarf, pants/skirt, a jacket or printed dress, this move gives your attire a bit more color, style and dresses the outfit up slightly more. Statement pieces are always essential; even if you don’t wear much jewelry you only need a couple pieces to start off with to give your outfits more pop. Whether it be a necklace, bangles/bracelets, midi rings, earrings, a headpiece on top of your hijab, or all of the above, it us up to you. Be original and unique ladies find a style that suits you, express yourself through your clothing/hijab style and rock it! Remember, we are beautiful, courageous, self-conscious, fierce, sophisticated, respectable women!
