Have you ever been in a rut? Not that you’re depressed or anything or having a midlife crisis, but a fashion rut. Ever find yourself always trying to match? Aren’t you tired of it? I ask these questions because I found myself in horrible cycle of boring outfits this summer and I couldn’t get out of it. Until one day I was looking through some of my favorite style bloggers and realized I wasn’t having fun with my clothes. My closet didn’t look horrible, it was just so safe. YUCK! I had always been the girl who took risks with her outfits and never thought of herself as matchy matchy or even plain. However, this summer I came to the dreadful realization that my everyday ensembles were lacking. So, I made a decision. In order to start to love what I wear I had to come up with a plan to stop my boring streak right in its tracks. I figured out what was happening to me every day when I got dressed, I was over thinking EVERYTHING! Here are my 3 rules to stop over thinking outfits and to start wearing what you love.
Stop taking so long:
You know that feeling when you wake up and your dreading getting dressed so you just stare at your closet for almost an hour hoping something will pop out of it, without you actually going through it. Stop that! Get your hands in your closet and pick out that cute top your body gravitated to. Who cares if it’s a little fancy or wacky? You can work on calming it down with the rest of your outfit. Just keep moving. Don’t think too much about it.
Everything doesn’t have to match:
That’s right! Just because you want to wear green pants doesn’t mean you have to wear green anywhere else on your body. Maybe you’re feeling that burgundy and cream striped top, go for it! Just make sure your shoes aren’t trying to command attention also. Sometimes matching can limit the expression of your personality. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes the whole monochromatic look is done really well and expresses your personality in a different way. Just don’t get caught up in it or your closet may end up looking like a scene from the Power Rangers.
Don’t be afraid of old trends.
I said it first. If it were a bad idea to wear those ugly overalls then the 90s surely would not be coming back. I am all for the blast from the past outfits with a little modern day spin. That’s what it’s all about right? Past trends coming back modernizing it and making it your own. Don’t be afraid of those old bell bottoms in your closet. All they need is a cute white button down and maybe that navy blue blazer or cardigan and you have a cute casual Friday outfit for work.
With these three tips, you should be able to bring that dull style of yours back to life. Wearing what you love is more important than wearing what you think everyone else will love. So stop over thinking and get back on your style game!
“Dress for yourself and the man you love (if there is one). Women dressing to impress other women––forget about that. Forget about that. It’s a very bad way of thinking.”— Karl Lagerfeld
